4 Month Hobby-a-thon

Ok, now I'm done with uni for the summer, i can focus on my hobby a little more. Having been nagged by both my flatmate and gaming friends, I'm not starting my Dark Mechanicum project just yet, seeing as i've got 14 on the go already.

When put like that, It really puts things into perspective just how wandering my hobby mind really is.

This is what I've got on the go at the moment:

Deathwing
Space Wolves
Pre-Heresy Thousand Sons
Chaos Space Marines
Hochland Empire
LOTR Dunedain force
LOTR Board
Soul Drinkers
Scratchbuilt Warmaster Horus
Malifaux Show Girls
Vampire Counts
Night Goblins
Fellowship of the Ring from Mines of Moria
Dark Elves

As you can see, it's a mighty list and one that may never be finished without drastic action. So with that in mind I've set myself a(nother) goal.

I've made a list of everything that needs to be done from each of these projects and for the next four months, everything I do hobby-wise will be from that list. Hopefully by the end of it, the list will dwindle to a managable amount, so I can start on my Dark Mechanicum.

As usual with me there are a few ground rules:

1. No half-efforts.

Yes, this is about getting models finished, but I also want nice looking armies at the end of it, so there'll be no compromising on the quality of the modelling, paint jobs, basing, etc, no matter how much i have to do. It's going to be both about quantity and quality at the same time

2. There needs to be a limit on the amount I paint for each project.

No army can really be said to be truely done, so I need to set myself a cut off point for each one.
For 40k it'll be 1750 points, as that's the main points level around my area. Similarly, the cut off point for Fantasy will be 2000 points and for Lord of the Rings it'll be 500 points.
I've written army lists for each force to work to. Nothing will be painted that isn't on those lists, to minimize the potential for distraction. Hopefully it'll work

3. Document it all

This is more of a side project in itself. My posting on here has been a little sparse recently because of college work, so if i document every model and stage whilst working through the list, I can then post it up on the Wandering Mind and share the grand scope of my mind with you. Also, looking back through my older posts, it'll be good to deliver some closure on all those projects I've mentioned over the last few years and have never been heard from again.

These are simple rules, but hopefully that'll mean they're easy to stick to. Check back soon to find out whether there actually work. Right now I'm heading for my hobby desk...

New Dark Mechanicum Candidates

Ok so the new Necron models are full of disappointment. With the exception of possibly the Tomb Blades, they look more like they belong in a Dark Eldar army rather than amongst the simplicty of a Necron force. Many Necron players around my local GW agree with me too.

However the new models look like great candidates for Dark Mechanicum conversions. As soon as I've got the money, I'm adding a contingent of twisted warmachines to my Blood Pact and Chaos Space Marines based off these beauties.

Njal Stormcaller WIP

It's getting depressing just how many back projects I have to clear.

Well it seemed like a simple enough goal to set myself: Build and paint all your half-finished projects, before you buy new models. That way I'll have a load of finished armies and will save me some money while I'm working on what I've already got.

Seems fine to me, I thought and promptly started cataloguing every single model I had left unfinished, so I could tick them off as they were completed and I could see what I have left to do.

Two days and over 300 models later, I was barely half way through my collection, but I persevered. Eventually I had a comprehensive list of what I needed to do and set to work, painting an entire Mordheim warband in an afternoon and feeling very proud of myself. i ticked them off and took a well earned break. Everything seemed to be going well.

The my flatmate asked me to find something in the cupboard for him. Rooting around for it, I found a box containing my half-finished Space Wolves army gathering dust. I swore rather loudly at this point.

So anyway, I decided to pick up a pot of the new GW dry paints and paint them up staright away, taking me a step closer to that magical point can start buying GW models again and making sure I didn't need to enter them onto my list, taking me further away from my goal than I had been before I painted the Mordheim warband

Anyway, here's Njal Stormcaller, half painted.

I used a heavy drybrush of Etherium Blue over a Chaos Black undercoat as a base, then applied a light wash of Badab Black to create the stormy-grey colour I was after.

After that I applied various washes to various parts of the the model to bring him to how he is now.

Mainly I just need to paint details like his beard, tailsmans and staff, then base him, then he's done. The rest of my Wolves will be painted in pretty much the same way, which hopefully will speed up the whole process, seeing as the Etherium Blue condenses what used to be about five different layers of painting into one drybrush.

All in all I'm proud of the way he's turned out, despite the rushed paint job. Once I've got pictures of them, I'll put up my Grey Hunters i painted in the same way, as I think it's a great and speedy way to churn out a Space Wolves army

Considering Malifaux

On the advice of a friend, I checked out a new gaming club tonight (Aftermath in Norwich), seeing as my gaming life has suffered in the last few months since moving into my new flat.

Seems a decent enough place, with plenty of 40k and Fantasy players, but there were also a lot of other games going on, from Battle for Westeros to Warmachine and various trading card games . One game that particularly drew my attention though was Malifaux.

I got to sit in on a game and it seems a pretty nifty and streamlined rule set. There's also the fact that I've been eyeing up the models in my local gaming shop for months now - you've got to love steampunk.

Anyway, to cut a long story short: one of the players has offered to take me through a couple of test games, so I can get the hang of the rules before joining the regulars down at the club

It gives me a good excuse to pick up a set of those gorgeous models that Wyrd Miniatures is doing, as well as learn a new system that could keep me gaming for the next few months (money's going to be tight), seeing as you get everything you need for a crew in one box and the rulebook's cheap enough to pick up.

So yeah, going down to my LGS tomorrow, see which crew i most like. At the moment, I'm leaning towards these these lovely ladies:

They'll be a nice painting challenge for me and hopefully they'll do well in-game too. I'll let you know how I get on

Leaked Flyer

This was accidentally put up on the Forge World site earlier on:

The picture is titled 'Storm Eagle', which if current popular rumours are to be believed will be the new flyer available to all space marine chapters in the next round of codices. However the fact that it was leaked on Forge World probably means that it's a release they've got lined up rather than GW.

Either way, it looks completely awesome and in my opinion is what the Stormraven should've looked like. The only issue I have with it is that it looks a little too sleek and streamlined for the Space Marine design philosophy, but that's just me.

Overall Verdict: Bring it on! I want at least one for all three of my loyalist marine armies, one for my chaos, plus I'd convert one into a Pre-Heresy flyer for my Thousand Sons too

Back with actual painted models

So havn't posted anything for a while, but don't worry I've been busy. Finally into my new flat and fully unpacked, including my hobby area and internet connection, so I can start updating The Wandering Mind regularly again

I've been immensely busy painting up things from about a dozen different projects at once, so as I get a chance to photograph them, I'll post them up.

First thing I've got to show you is my WIP Deathwing Dreadnought.

I still need to finish the green and the metal but i'm quite proud of how the bone-colour has turned out.
The look I'm going for is to make the force look like it's been fighting through the depths of a Space Hulk for weeks on end (i.e Very dirty), partly because i think it's a cool look, but also because I can't manage a decent looking clean bone colour scheme

I've also started work revamping my CSM warband, spurred on by rumours of the upcoming Legions book.

Here's my PIP on my lord, based of Huron Blackheart's body, but he's going to end up with A Jump Pack, Thunder Hammer (Power Fist) and Storm Shield (Mark of Tzeentch)

I'll post more of his Warband soon, as I dig them out of boxes. Many of the models are from my old chaos army which I stopped playing when the current CSM book came out and sucked away all the flavour of the faction.

Anyway, I'm going to get back to painting. I'll post more soon

Bloodthirster nearly done

Here's my Cygor-based Bloodthrister nearly built, minus a few minor armour and weapon details

The 'fun' bit's going to be trying to paint this beast

A whole lot of Terminators...

Ok, so I caved. I deviated from my list.

I can never resist a bargain, so I just had to pick up these when I saw them going cheap online...

That's 46 Terminators of various types and 1 Dreadnought. These will be funneled into my various projects I've got going, mainly Deathwing and Scarab Occult, although some will go into my CSM's too

but first need to focus on that list...Focus, Khorneguy, focus!

Bloodthirster progress

Ok, so the Zombie plan didn't quite pay off. As I've said before, I'm moving flat in the next couple of days, so the need to pack kind of overtook me.

However, I did manage to get a little progress done on the Bloodthirster. Not much, admittedly, but at least it's something

Hopefully by the weekend I'll have my new hobby area ready, complete with proper lighting set up, so there'll be both progress on all my projects and proper picture to show you.

Zombies arise!

With the new Vampire Counts book now up for pre-order, I felt it was time to tackle the Zombie part of my check list.

Over the next couple days I'll be painting up this lot:

I've wanted an all-zombie horde for years and with the new book, what better chance will I have?

I also want to pick up some of the gorgeous new models that are on the way, namely the Mortis Engine/Coven Throne and Vargheists, but I'm staying strong and not buying any more models until my checklist is done.

So this afternoon I will tackle all those Zombies, as well as the Necromancer, as I've been hearing rumours of a Lord-level Necromancer option making a comeback. Hopefully I won't have to buy Kemmler to access that option, but only time and having the book in my hands will tell.
